My VW 1.4 automatic polo is not changing gears. its just stuck in gear 1 and consumes a lot of fuel. VW's temperature gauges are notoriously inaccurate. If your car was mine, I would do two things. 1 buy a scangauge or similar scanner and get the temp reading directly from the ecu. 2 buy an inexpensive IR thermometer and take the engine temp at the upper rad hose when you suspect it is overheating. The engine management light first begins to flash but there is no real noticeable symptoms. The light then comes on permanently and the engine runs on no 1 and no 3 only. The car got water in diesel tank and now has white smoke from start to stop, hot or cold. Turbo was repaired and timing was checked. The engine has a new head gasket and no oil in water. re: VW Polo - Difficulty selecting 1st, 2nd & 5th gears. It is not a fault. In my polo tdi, the shifts to 1st and 2nd are bit tricky. There is a resistance point before the gear lever slots in correctly.If I shift lazily or try to be too smooth with shifts, chances are that the lever gets stuck at this point. cAlE.
