In Age of Sigmar, each of the different armies (now called factions) are a part of one of the four Grand Alliances. It is possible to field an army with models from the different factions within the same grand alliance, although it might not be the strongest army you can field. In Warhammer: Fantasy this would have been called ” mixing armies”.
In my last game against a friend (he played Bonesplitters) my list was: Allegiance: Cities of Sigmar: Hallowheart. LEADERS. Freeguild General (100) - General - Veteran of the Blazing Crusade. Battlemage (110) - Mortal Realm: Ulgu (and 2 spells from Hallowheart) Battlemage (110)

Early in the Age of Chaos, the God-King Sigmar was forced to retreat from the Mortal Realms and seal off Azyr following the loss of the forces of

Armies to avoid are: - Ossiarch (they have different rules and dont intereact with core elements of the game) - Cities of Sigmar (way too many possibilities) - Lumineth (too complex) - Sylvaneth (complex, but mostly cause you gotta bring a ton of gd trees) From the ones you listed, I'd say StD is probably the easiest.
Age of Sigmar offers more grandeur and dynamic models out of the two, with the build quality being excellent and plenty of the models not requiring glue to assemble. As Warhammer 40k is the older system, Games Workshop is slowly updating its older models, with Black Templars being the latest Space Marine chapter to receive a rehaul and an
